U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has recently published an update to its extremely popular publication called “Welcome to the United States: A Guide for New Immigrants”. This comprehensive guide provides new immigrants with practical information in order to learn about what lies ahead concerning adjusting to everyday life in the United States. The updated guide includes extremely useful information such as locating a place to live, how to get a Social Security number, paying taxes, resources for obtaining healthcare and also provides detailed information on how the U.S. system of government operates.
Updated Policies, Plans, Programs & Resources
The updated guide contains revised general information on immigration policies, programs and resources and has a refreshed layout and design. There is also a new chapter named “Taking Care of Your Money” that provides new immigrants with information regarding personal finance, taxes and becoming aware of financial scams and preventing identity theft. This chapter also discusses banking, obtaining credit and managing personal credit reports.
New Information on Healthcare & Education
Another new chapter called “Understanding Education and Health Care” provides immigrants with information regarding the U.S. education system, which is important to parents of school aged children, including information useful for college and university students. There is also information included in this chapter about adult education programs, including programs for learning English, as well as information on how to obtain health insurance for individuals and families through the open marketplace. Generally, people in the United States pay for their own medical care either directly or through insurance and the updated welcome guide provides information on the U.S. healthcare system along with resources for obtaining affordable health insurance.
Explanation of Processes, Guidelines & Multiple Languages
As with previous versions, the guide contains information regarding safety and disaster preparedness and a brief summary on Homeland Security. The guide also contains detailed information regarding how to become a Naturalized citizen, including an explanation of the process along with guidelines that need to be met in order to obtain U.S. citizenship. The newly updated 116 page guide is available online in PDF format and one of the best features of the welcome guide is that it is immediately available in 14 different languages, which makes it very convenient to non-English speakers.
